If you check the histories of Gallifrey they will likely say the two most important Time Lords of all time are Rassilon and Omega.
Working together Omega and Rassilon brought time travel to Gallifrey.
Omega’s experiments on a device known as the Hand of Omega and designed to control reactions within a star was the origin of the power needed for time travel. However, in an attempt to prove this, Omega created a supernova which killed him before collasping into a black hole. Rasslion was then able to capture the nucleus of that black hole (the Eye of Harmony) and became Lord President of Gallifrey.
In The Three Doctors we discover that Omega didn’t actually die. He was trapped in an antimater universe and has gone mad. He wants revenge on the Time Lords who, he thinks, abandoned him.
Okay, that’s the background to Omega. What about Benedict Cumberbatch who wowed us all with his portrait of Sherlock Holmes in Steven Moffat’s remake.
There’s been plenty of speculation that Cumberbatch will be involved in Doctor Who. One theory is that he will play the Master but that’s just speculation. You can judge for yourself by catching up this with video in which he hints at something himself.
Is it time to introduce another Time Lord – as a villian again – to the show? We’ve even had Rassilon. Will viewers wonder if all Time Lords other than the Doctor are evil loons?
More importantly, why are we discussing whether Omega will return at all?
Doctor Who has very many intelligent fans. Two particularly smart fans are Combom and the The Graske. They’ve noticed a certain symbol making an appearance in the previous season and the speculation that follows is pretty interesting stuff.
This is the symbol which represents the last letter in the Greek alphabet. This is omega. It has a numberic value of 800 and means mega or “great”.
Compare Omega to this symbol that Comborn and The Graske noticed already appearing in season 5.
Wondering where you might have seen that? Check out the logo on River Song‘s arm from the Time of Angels.
There’s more as well. Try these two on for size. The first is easy to spot; just by the word “Air Lock” and the second is above the monitor showing the Weeping Angel.
You’ll recall in the Time of Angels that the soldiers were actually the Church. But who’s Church? The hero who came back from the dead? That would be Omega then…
As Graske reminds us. River Song says she killed the best man she ever knew. Could she have been involved in the accident that killed Omega? Is that why she’s worried about the Doctor’s reaction to what her secret is.
This is all speculation but its interesting stuff. What’s your take? Could River Song be a follower of Omega? What is “The silence”?
